Self-custody & wallet security
Understand self-custody, recovery phrases, encrypted backups and token permissions. Learn which security checks to make before using a crypto wallet.
The independent seed route
A 24-word phrase can restore compatible accounts, provided the destination application supports the required derivation paths and networks. Check known addresses for EVM, Solana and Bitcoin separately. Keep the original wallet intact until you have confirmed that the recovery works.
Encrypted and sharded recovery
Key Guard, also called Magic Keys, is a recovery model described as three key shards: two encrypted user-held shards and one protected by secure storage or guardians. It uses five personal Access Codes, with at least three remembered, plus a backup file. This model depends on backup integrity, recovery channels and service availability; it differs from an independent offline seed.
Secure the whole recovery path
Use strong, non-public recovery answers, secure your email and cloud accounts, and keep independent offline recovery where supported. Never share a phrase, private key or active recovery code with a website or support contact. Verify backup requirements before changing a device or deleting an application.
Key control and privacy are different
A service can lack authority to spend your assets while still observing public addresses, transactions or request metadata. RPC services, indexers, route providers and block explorers have their own information flows. Consider what each connection reveals before using it.
Manage permissions deliberately
Review connected applications and token allowances regularly. Separate accounts used for different purposes where practical. An extended public key can expose related addresses even though it cannot normally spend funds. Share only the public information needed to diagnose a specific transaction.
